Bicycle leasing is rapidly gaining popularity, and from 2025, the education sector will also enjoy numerous benefits. The Flemish government is making it possible for teachers to use part or all of their gross year-end allowance for bicycle leasing through their school board. This is more tax-efficient than buying a bike with net salary.
In this article, we explain how bicycle leasing works and why it is an excellent choice for school boards and teachers.
Starting January 1, 2025, teachers can use their gross year-end allowance to lease a (electric) bike. This is more tax-efficient than buying a bike with your net salary. The scheme applies from the 2025 year-end allowance and gives you the opportunity to commute to work more cheaply and healthily.
Permanent staff members must decide by January 1, 2025, whether they want to use their year-end bonus for bicycle leasing. Temporary staff members can use their 2026 year-end bonus and must decide before the 2025-2026 school year.
It is up to the school board to decide if and under what conditions bicycle leasing is offered. They are not required to offer this scheme, but if they do, they must detail the conditions in a contract with Lease a Bike. This contract includes agreements on the cost, the bikes offered, the duration of the lease, and the costs for early termination of the contract.
When a school board decides to offer bicycle leasing, there are a few steps that need to be followed:
If you work as a teacher for multiple school boards, you can lease a bike from only one of them. The school boards make local agreements to make bicycle leasing practically feasible. They handle communication with AGODI/AHOVOKS and ensure administrative processing in the payroll systems.
School boards can also choose to offer bicycle leasing through other financing means. This means that the costs of bicycle leasing can be separate from the year-end allowance paid by the Agency for Educational Services (AGODI). The school board enters into an agreement with a leasing company for this.
